Strategy and Aims


DMU is one of the leading modern universities for research. We apply our research to the benefit of businesses and communities and deliver improvements to healthcare, society and individuals’ lives.

Our outstanding track record is one of our core strengths and is backed up by the latest Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) which rates more than 40 per cent of our research activity as ‘internationally excellent’ (3 star) and ‘world leading’ (4 star).

Research Assessment Exercise 2008 - key facts

  • DMU is ranked fourth highest, alongside Cambridge University, for its English Literature research, with 40 per cent of the research rated 4 star.
  • 50 per cent of research in the creative disciplines achieved 3 and 4 stars.
  • 70 per cent of The Earth and Planetary Remote Sensing Laboratory's research was ranked 3 star and 4 star.
  • 65 per cent of research at the Institute of Energy and Sustainable Development was rated 3 star and 4 star 
  • 60 per cent of Film and Media research was rated 3 star and 4 star

DMU has more than 50 specialist research groups and institutions, active in more than 400 projects and in 2007/08 we received nearly £9 million from research grants and contracts.

The 2008 RAE results have provided us with a firm foundation for our future developments in research.
